One of my long time favourite bands Saint Etienne came to York Fibbers as part of a small Christmas tour. I covered the show for One&Other and managed to have a chat with Sarah afterwards, I intended asking probing questions about the band’s continuing search for the perfect pop song but ended up talking about Lego…


A real bonus to the night was seeing Scritti Politti opening. An absolutely perfect ‘Sweetest Girl’ began their set with Green’s vocals as distinctive as they ever have been.


Saint Etienne’s setlist merrily cherry-picked from their entire career from the glorious ‘Nothing Can Stop Us Now’ from debut album Foxbase Alpha right up to this year’s acclaimed ‘Words & Music by Saint Etienne’.


There was a festive end to the night with a cover of ‘Driving Home For Christmas’ and their own ‘I Was Born On Christmas Day’. It was then time for me to discover the secrets of their craft. Either that or what Sarah’s kids are getting for Christmas…
